0ur Volcanic Island of Montserrat was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 during his second voyage to the 'New World'.
He named it so because the rugged terrain reminded him of the site of the Monastery of Montserrat, near Barcelona: Montserrat
(Spanish)= saw toothed mountains
.

HISTORY OF PHILATELIC

On August 20, 1702 a regular postal packet service was granted to Montserrat by Queen Anne. The vessel the “Bridgeman” undertook the round trip of over 3 months from Britain.

The efficiency of the postal system improved in 1842 when the ships of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company replaced the “Bridgeman.”

The first stamps issued in Montserrat were the Antiguan 1 penny Rose and the 6 penny Green overprinted with the word MONTSERRAT .

The Montserrat Philatelic Bureau Ltd began operations under the direction of Mr. Richard Sweet on April 1, 1976 who was appointed by Philatelists,a company in England .
